Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

We know there’s nothing more precious to you than your new little one. That’s why we’ve worked tirelessly to build a suite of services worthy of your utmost trust. In our distinguished 41-bed level IV NICU, our skilled team cares for our tiniest patients with the skill, technology and compassion your family deserves.

Providing care for our smallest patients requires precise skill, complex technology, specialized facilities, and passionate caregivers. UMC’s NICU facilities include a Level IV nursery, a neonatal air transport team, pre-discharge “Rooming In” services, and infant CPR training.

UMC NICU Level IV Designated

Care Deserving of Your Confidence

In 2018, UMC Children’s Hospital was awarded the NICU Level IV Designation by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the highest a NICU can achieve. As a level IV NICU, our facility is equipped to care for the most complex neonatal conditions and the sickest and smallest newborns, no matter their gestational age at birth. And that means you can feel confident your newborn is in the best of hands.

Our Prenatal Care

Working collaboratively with the provider who referred you to us, the perinatal care team at UMC’s Center for Perinatal Medicine provides support for your high-risk pregnancy, including consultations, genetic counseling, non-stress testing services, advanced ultrasounds and more.

What to Expect

Your baby may be sent to the NICU after being born in UMC’s Family Birth Center or at another hospital—and it can be unsettling if you aren’t sure what will happen next. But rest assured: You can visit your baby at any time, and we’ll be here to guide you through the experience.

Taking your baby home after a stay in the NICU is a cause for celebration… but it can also be scary. That’s why we first offer you an opportunity to spend the night with your baby in one of our family rooms, where we’ll be close by if you need help.

Before you leave, we’ll arrange for follow-up appointments. We’ll also make sure you understand how to:

  • Administer infant CPR
  • Give your baby needed medications
  • Install your car seat securely
  • Use any special equipment your baby needs

Hear What Parents Have to Say

Weighing less than one pound at birth, Christopher was the smallest baby ever to graduate from the hospital’s NICU and go home with his loving family. Known to his family as “Christopher the Courageous,” he spent nearly a year receiving highly specialized, round-the-clock care from the clinical professionals at UMC Children’s Hospital.

Just months after Christopher went home, Isaac was born at 1 pound 10 ounces and spent three months in the NICU. Thanks to the world-class care they received from Dr. Banfro and his colleagues at UMC Children’s Hospital, Christopher and Isaac continue to grow and thrive.
